So abdominal pain is notoriously difficult to diagnose without laboratory studies and imaging studies such as a CT Scan. This being said, I can offer a few thoughts.

The type of pain you are experiencing is termed 'colicky' pain- pain that comes and goes suddenly.

To complicate matters abdominal pain is perceived differently than pain in other areas of the body because of the way the nerves to the abdomen are wired.

Based on your symptoms the cause could literally be anything from a hernia to problems with the ovaries to an intestinal problem.

I'm sorry to not be able to help more, but if you click on THIS LINK HERE you might be able to learn a bit about possible and likely causes of your pain.

Thanks for your question.

Intermittent, colicky, pain in right lower abdomen:

The appendix is in this area but more commonly causes a steadier pain and gets progressively worse.

Inflamation of the bowel (Crohn disease, regional enteritis) can cause symptons in this area.

Problems with the ovary or ovarian tube.

Kidney stones.

Gall bladder stones can cause intermittent pains, but are usually felt in the right upper abdomen

Hernia is usually associated with some swelling, but not always.

An ultrasound can shed some light on several of these problems; a C-T scan can give a bit more detail if the ultrasound is inconclusive; barium x-rays of the intestinal tract can also help with inflammatory bowel dis.

Blood tests and urinalysis should also be done

Definitely should be checked out with your doctor.

Best of Luck! Space Doc
