I think we may be missing your main question here.... it did not come through in the form. Can you clarify the question or be more specific in the comment section? To start with, the WORST place for you to get a chronic, non-emergency condition diagnosed and treated is the hospital. The ER is set up for emergencies. If you do not have one they will send you on your way with instructions to follow up with your doctor. If you do not have a doctor this IS a problem as, and again, I think your main question is not asked above, but it sounds very much like you need to be evaluated for low back pain, possibly a herniated disk. An orthopedic surgeon or a good Family Practice doctor is a good place to start. We are standing by for clarification or restatement of your question.

I agree with MEDSTAT ER DOC 1 that this sounds very much like sciatica, and the most common caause is pressure on the sciatic nerve from a bulging or herniated disc in the lower back.

Sciatica usually occurs on one rather than both legs. The pain can be felt in the buttocks and often down the back of the leg.

The pain is usually aggravated by sitting (especially on a hard surface) and by stretching. and certainly can be bothersome with walking.

I don't think the surgeries for the gall bladder, bowel, and appendix would be causing sciatica, but sometimes arthritis can create some pressure on the sciatic nerve. It doesn't sound like a restless leg syndrome.

An x-ray of the lower back can occasionally show a narrowing of the space between the vertebrae in the low back indicating a collapsed or herniated disc, but it usually requires an MRI to get a good picture of the discs.

The real stumbling block is the fact that you have no health insurance. It might be worthwhile to put in a call to the hospital and see if something cou9ld be worked out with a social worker to see if you could qualify for medicaid or at least to work out a payment program.

If this is a disc problem, sometimes repeat steroid injections could help, but there is a danger in getting too much steroid which can be associated with a number of side effects

In some cases physical therapy can be helpful, but ideally you should get a definite diagnosis (A CT scan could be done if you have metal clips from any of your surgeries.)

It's possible to live with sciatica without getting any treatment, but in a lot of cases surgery to remove the offending disc is necessary to really take care of the problem.

It sounds like a social worker would also help with all the pressures of raising a family and the emotional struggles of going through a divorce.

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate!!

Good luck!! Space Doc
