If there is visible drainage cultures can be taken to look for infection.<br /><br />Any infection in a fracture could be considered 'critical' due to the danger of the infection getting into the bone and causing osteomyelitis, so it was good that you got the i.v.s.<br /><br />Usually the surgeons are very watchful for any infections---seems doubtful that it was overlooked, but it can be difficult to diagnose.<br /><br />Good luck!
